Kool Korner Sandwiches

790 Montgomery Highway (Vestavia Hills)
822-4406
Ildefonso Ramirez won national acclaim for his authentic Cuban sandwiches at his Kool Korner Sandwiches in Atlanta. The 86-year-old retired to Birmingham but decided retirement wasn't for him, and re-opened the shop in the Vestavia Hills City Center in a former Firehouse Subs location. Serving authentic pressed Cuban sandwiches piled high with roasted pork and Swiss cheese and drenched in mojo sauce. We thought the service was great for a counter-service place, Cuban sandwich and the chicken sandwich (which Ramirez also makes in-house) were delicious, and the plaintain chips for sale were an authentic touch. No-frills counter service, limited menu, but delicious food. Update July 2010: They've added  black bean soup, tamales and guava pastelitos to the menu.

My husband and I ate at Kool Korner Sandwiches this past weekend. We both tried the Classis Cuban Sandwich and we both really liked it. The sandwich had a very good flavor and the bread was nice and crusty. They also offered plantain chips which we had not had before but both enjoyed. We will definitely be back again.

Had my first visit to Kool Korner last Saturday. The best Cuban Sandwhich I've ever had. The bread, which really is key to a real Cuban Sandwich, was perfect. I assume Mr.Ramirez has a great source for this bread from Miami or Tampa. Really really nice touch also to have the excellent plantain chips from Tampa available. Mr. Ramirez came by our table and talked with us about his years in Atlanta and his hopes for the future here in Birmingham. Really good and unique food!

Heard very good things about this place and then went to eat for myself. VERY disappointed. The Cuban sandwich was pretty boring with not much to it. I grew up in Miami and have eaten my fair share of Cuban food over the years. This place is more hype than substance. AVOID!

In a couple of ocassions I have bought these sandwiches, and I have to admit they are fantastic, all the ingredients are fresh nad have an uncommon flavor which make them a little peculiar.
