2 N 20th St (the corner of Morris Ave and 20th St. downtown)
Burgers, Mediterranean food (like pitas and hummus), sandwiches, salads, daily vegetable selection. Breakfast and lunch. The back of the menu explains, "Sol Bajalieh arrived in the United States in 1965. His love of two things, people and food, inspired him to open Sol's Sandwich Shop & Deli in 1968 in downtown Birmingham at the original John Hand building. Sol provided the downtown scene with delicious meals until the building was condemned in 1995. Fast forward 13 years later, and Sol's three sons, Jeff, Chris, and Jason, have revived a great Birmingham tradition to honor their late father." In a November 2008 review, City Scene's Susan Swagler says the food and service were five-star, with praise for the Cuban sandwich, the camel rider sandwich, and a "fantastic" vegetable plate, but she dinged it a star for the "cheerless lack of atmosphere".
3511 Pelham Parkway (Hwy. 31)
City Scene 2007 review called it "a pretty (and pretty delightful) homegrown cafe," with decor "reminiscent of a garden," a lunch spot serving sandwiches and salads. Crab and corn soup was thick and savory, homemade chicken salad is mixed with grapes, pecans and celery; pimento cheese is a little on the sweet side, tuna salad was tasty and fresh. Quiche, however, was rubbery and overdone. Homemade desserts especially impressed, such as caramel cake, fudge brownie, hummingbird cake, 7UP cake.
588 Shades Crest Road, Hoover/Bluff Park
Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Located in the former Citgo gas station at the intersection of Shades Crest Road and Park Avenue in Bluff Park, across from the former Bert's on the Bluff. Literally on a cliff hanging on the edge of Shades Mountain, the view is the main draw for this breakfast and lunch eatery. Hot dogs, burgers, sandwiches, plus breakfast menu. Birmingham Magazine singled it out for its 2004 "Best of Birmingham" issue, saying, "The burgers at The Tip Top Grill in Bluff Park are almost as good as the spectacular panoramas of Shades Valley from the outdoor tables at this tiny restaurant."
2320 Second Ave. North, Downtown
Breakfast menu features bagels, biscuits, scones, fruit, grits topped with smoked sausage and cheese. Serving coffee from Primavera Coffee Roasters in Cahaba Heights. Lunchtime offers hearty eats on a rotating basis, including homemade soups and sandwiches served on Continental Bakery and Big Sky bread. Also cold case items such as chicken salad, pimiento cheese, fruit, pasta salad, and other salads. You'll find baked goods, including cupcakes that Black & White said were "in the first-class category". In addition to the culinary offerings, enjoy shopping amongst a selection of antiques, handmade art, candles, books and other unusual and unique items.
