A 1970's Homewood landmark serving traditional and designer sandwiches, gourmet salads (including a fabulous fruit plate), cheesecakes and milkshakes for dessert, is now franchising and has several locations around town. Menus vary somewhat by location, but all have the O'Carr's mantra "eat by color," emphasizing a balanced diet, fresh ingredients and attractive presentation.

There's a small smoothie, juice and coffee bar tucked in the front of this organic foods store that also serves sandwiches, soup and salad during lunch. In addition to vegetarian offerings such as jack and veggie panini or wrap, "Veggie salvation" wrap and almond butter with honey and pecans, you'll also find options for those who enjoy organic meats, including the organic turkey wrap and an organic roast beef and Jack sandwich. Weekday lunch spot -- dine in, take out, personal and corporate catering. Choose from a large selection of hot and cold sandwiches, wraps, and salads (chicken, pasta, caesar, potato, etc.), plus daily specials. A number of vegetarian and low-fat options are available. An August 2009 City Scene review found the Reuben "above average for Birmingham," called the Thai Chicken Wrap "a hit," and roast beef with horseradish "excellent." Sides were all good, but none was outstanding.

Classic subs, sandwiches and salads, such as meatball or roast beef subs, corned beef reuben, ham and swiss, chicken salad, as well as pasta dinners served daily. Named a "hidden gem of dining" in Birmingham News City Scene, March 2009, which notes, "Ranelli's has been a Birmingham fixture for so long -- since 1971, in fact -- that it tends to get forgotten, but the sub sandwiches and baked lasagna are among the best in town. The blues-bar atmosphere adds to the funky appeal."
