3236 Cahaba Heights Road, Vestavia
A casual Mediterranean restaurant with barbecue-joint ambiance. Gyros, hummus, grilled chicken several ways, falafel, babaghanouj, kabobs, etc. Named a "hidden gem of dining" in Birmingham News City Scene, March 2009, which said, "Don't leave without trying the stuffed squash, an Olive Branch special that is available only on Monday and Tuesday nights."
2801 Highway 150, Suite 137-J, Hoover (John Hawkins Parkway, across from Wal-Mart)
Billed as Mediterranean American Specialties, The Pita Cafe offers the typical Middle Eastern offerings, such as gyros, falafel, hummos and kabobs, along with some American-style fare, including buffalo wings, ribeye steak, French fries and a grilled chilcken sandwich. Plenty of vegetarian offerings, including falafel, vegetable kabobs and salads. A nice alternative for casual eating to the many chains in and around the Galleria area, but a bit slow.
1106 12th Street South, Southside, 328-2749
3908 Crosshaven Drive, Cahaba Heights, 969-7482 (across from Winn-Dixie)
A fixture on Birmingham's Southside for more than three decades, now with a second location in Cahaba Heights. Lebanese-American specialties for lunch and dinner. A great casual place to go and get a real meal and a drink in a nice atmosphere and not break the bank. Entrees (our favorites are lamb, beef or seafood kabobs) come with rice pilaf, pitas and delicious hummus, Greek-style salad and fruit. They offer kibbee, falafel, tabbouleh, hummus and stuffed grape leaves. The Cahaba Heights location also offers gyros.
