« Ichiban Japanese Steak House | Main | Kobe Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar »

1820 29th Ave. South (SOHO), Homewood
Upscale Japanese restaurant opened by John Cassimus (founder and owner of Zoe's kitchen) and Charleston Wilson. Diners select from a menu of hot dishes, cold dishes and sushi. Birmingham Magazine, in a 2006 review, says "the ambiance is intimate, upscale -- and adult." Chef Nobuhito Kadoma has 20 years of experience, from Osaka to Aspen. Gayot.com notes that like the "calm, elegant decor punched up with touches of electric green ... the cuisine can deliver a hit of flavor." Food & Wine magazine in 2007 praised its "stellar Japanese dishes like aji (horse mackerel) served first raw, then deep-fried." Our take? Food and service are excellent, but you do pay for it. Skip the sushi rolls and go for the dishes you're not going to find elsewhere. Not into raw food? Try the Kobe beef mini-burgers.

Way too expensive. Good food, but overpriced.

The food was well worth the higher prices. For two people, we were able to try four menu items for about 50 dollars. The menu was diverse-we ordered the river rock kobe beef, the kadoma tuna, nikko rolls, and the fried green tomatoes with katsu. I would recommend Jensei to anyone.

Also, the service was impeccable!

I agree with Miriam . Its better to pay $50 and have the experience of the food and knowledge of the servers than to pay $30-$40 elsewhere and not be .
Worth It.

My husband and I went to Jinsei one time last year and have never gone back. The waiter was snotty. He did not refill our drinks the entire time we were there and when it came time to pay the bill, we gave him $40. Our total was $30, so we gave him a $10 tip despite his inattention to us. He looked at me strangely and said, "You only gave me $20." I said, "No, I gave you $40." He looked again and saw that I had given him $40 and walked off, without apologizing or saying anything. I've never been treated so rudely by a waiter in any other restaurant in Birmingham as long as I've resided here. He acted like my husband and I were common criminals and were trying to get out of paying the full amount we owed, but he just glanced at the amount of money I had given him and didn't look closely enough to see that I had given him $40, which was $10 more than what we owed. Needless to say, my husband and I won't be visiting Jinsei again.

The best place in Birmingham. We eat here nearly every weekend! Best food and mixed drinks I have ever had. It's well worth the money! I have had everyone there treat me like we have known each other for years, very nice staff!

Went there for my best friends 50th birthday dinner, the sushi was excellent and the service was not bad. We did feel like the locals were treated to a higher standard, but we were there for the food which did not disappoint. Would consider going back for the right occasion.
