GianMarco's

721 Broadway, Homewood (near Green Springs end of Broadway)
871-9622
Lunch (Wed-Fri) and dinner, full bar, reservations necessary (call at least a week and a half in advance for weekend reservations). The best Italian in Birmingham, hands-down. Cozy neighborhood Italian bistro offering sandwiches, salads, pasta and more. Dishes include fried calamari, eggless Caesar salad, pasta e fagioli, pork tenderloin with polenta, tuna steak with risotto, and zuppa di pesce over linguini. Don't miss the pistachio-crusted fried oysters appetizer. Lunch menu features sandwiches such as smoked turkey, grilled apples and Gorgonzola; grilled chicken with sauteed spinach and mushrooms; and grilled portobello mushrooms with roasted peppers.

We finally found some decent Italian food in the south! We were so spoiled after a trip to Italy and hadn't been able to find any place in Alabama that was worth dining out. We resorted to cooking home and trying to recreate the food we enjoyed in Italy. We were so thankful to find this new treasure. I am proud of our little metropolitan city in the south when my parent's come for a visit. I can finally say 'We have a great Italian place!" ( September 2003)

Recently enjoyed a fine dining experience at GianMarco's in Homewood. Small, limited parking, and hidden away in Homewood, this restaurant is as first-class as any in Birmingham. The ambiance is friendly, service quite professional and our meal was extraordinary. My wife and I both had the night's special, blackfis. It was served with an oyster sauce and spinach. Wine list is not extensive but more than adequate. There were no weaknesses in the dinner from the table bread through the coffee and desert. This is a place to linger over a fine meal. Conversation is easy with soft jazz playing in the background. Prices are reasonable for the quality involved. ine dining in a non-stuffy atmosphere -- the only problem is that it is always full to capacity. (September 2003)

A great restraunt with tasty traditional italian using fresh fresh fresh ingredients. Service is mixed and depends on the waiter you get. There is one guy in particular who has the personality of pencil lead and who acts annoyed if you ask any questions.

The food is always good however. For a really great experience, I recommend eating at the kitchen counter. You get top notch service at the counter and you get to watch the food being made. Its actually quite enjoyable, and one time we did it, is my favorite experience at this place. Only room for two though, but its quite romantic.

On 3/22/08, our group sat down for our 5:30pm reservation to enjoy a fine meal with good service. As we were finishing up chatting over our post-meal decaf (a few minutes after 7pm), the owner came to our table and asked us to leave. It seems his 7pm reservation group was upset and it was time to go. While we all understand the meaning of reservations, we should have been advised when the reservations were made that we would be expected to be done by 7pm. This was such a disappointing ending to what would have otherwise been a great evening out with friends.

Wow! What a wonderful meal! If only the service could complement it! The waiter did not seem to have time to answer any of our questions, nor did he seem interested in our table. Each time we would prepare to give him our order, he would turn away and talk to another table. This restaurant has excellent food, but needs to work on its service. It seems as though others feel the same.

My husband and I have been to GianMarco's a couple of times in the last few months. (Taylor Hicks ate two tables over from us back in September.) The food has always been delicious and the service prompt. I highly recommend the seafood risotto. This is definitely the best Italian place in town.

I just want to say this is probably the most enamored I have been with a Italian spot. First and foremost our waitress Courtney was the best and very attentive. The atmosphere was beautiful. I had two glasses of Belvedere Vodka and it was pretty pricey when I got the check but money is not an object when it comes to great food. I had the Maryland-Style Crab Cake over wilted baby spinach and roasted garlic aioli and I will say that was one of the best crab cakes I ever had. I know the spinach was supposedly used for garnishing the cake but it was just as good and ate the entire thing. My friend had the Calamari but I am not a big fan of it so I can't really give any feedback on it. My dish was the Tortellini alla Panna and I added Chicken and Shrimp and it was Excellent. The cream sauce was rich and thick and not watery. I really can't stop gushing about that food hours later. My friend had the Sausage and Peppers and I tried it and it was Great. We were too full for dessert but I can honestly say I was blown away by my experience and will be going back soon. I am going to try a few other spots but right now they are the best. First Class Service and Food. If you do go ask if you can sit in Courtney's section because she is a GREAT waitress! GianMarco's is a great spot.

My husband and I dined here for our anniversary to grave disappointment. We made reservations, still we waited well over 30 minutes for a table next to a glass encasing with raw meats. Where was the linen tablecloth and fine dining experience? The restaurant was lacking in ambiance. It was definitely rowdy with a pub-like sound level and vibe. We dined on a Thursday night. The food was mediocre at best. The wines I had preselected before arrival were unavailable. I had such high hopes for this place :(

Have you been to GianMarco since they opened the wine bar in the back? Somebody forgot to tell them to expand the kitchen. Too many tables for the size of the kitchen. I have been twice since they expanded. The first time we waited over an hour for our food. I thought - ok- tough night- so we tried them again Sept 14. Sat down at 7:30. Ordered at 8:25- Food did not arrive until 10:05.
I won;t be back until I hear they fix this problem. What a shame because the food is great but no restaurant is that good that anyone should wait that long.
