Tin Top BBQ

3477 County Road 33 (off U.S. 31), Calera
We don't normally list restaurants this far south of town, but Tin Top was a top 10 finalist in the Birmingham News' "Best Ribs in Birmingham" contest, 2008. Owner John Culbert started cooking BBQ when he was 14, nearly 35 years ago.

I have two favorite BBQ places in Alabama - Green Top and Tin Top. I have eaten BBQ all over the South and can say Tin Top has some of the best I have had. They provide you with huge sandwiches. If you order the large you had better be hungry. The beans are just as good as the meat. The sauce is just about perfect.
Almost forgot the ribs. They are great!
Tin Top is a true BBQ "Joint" [not one of those] chains. (Edited for tone, 8/1/08 -- Bhamdining)

Some friends and I were on our way from a winery in Calera to a Winery in Jemison and in search of lunch. We had talked about going to a chain restaurant just because they are familiar and the locals hadn't been much help with telling us about good food in the area. I was driving along a small county road and happened to notice a small tin-sided building with cars parked out front, a screened porch and smoke coming out of the chimney. I about turned the car on a dime to get there because we were almost past it before I realized it was a restaurant. This was the best split-second decision I have ever made. The barbecue was absolutely fantastic and the banana pudding was to die for. We had a group of 9 people, they got our food up quickly and everyone in the group said everything they had was excellent (between us we had ribs, pork sandwiches, 3 or 4 sides and the banana pudding--which almost everyone had a taste of and agreed it was awesome).
I agree with the previous poster that the word "joint" or even "roadhouse" would describe this place much better than the word "restaurant".

We eat there at least once a month. It has been 4 years since my first post. Everyone I have taken there says it is the best BBQ they have ever eaten. Johnny knows how to do BBQ.

Update. Johnny is not doing well health wise. TT has been closed for a couple months. The good news is the new owner has not changed a thing. Sandwich and ribs are as good as ever.

We get a whole butt.although their sauce is yummy, it's great with or without sauce. It normally lasts our family several days. We also order the baked beans -size- as large they sell--~they're phenomenal~
